‘Gerhard the Great’ is a series named after Gerhard III (c. 1290–1 April 1340) of the Rendsburg line of the House of Schauenburg, who reigned as Duke of Schleswig and Count of Holstein. He was known by the epithet ‘de groote Gert’ (‘Gerhard the Great’) and is referred to in Danish historical accounts as ‘Den kullede greve’ (‘the bald count’).
