A Collector’s Journey Through Velier

At the turn of the millennium, Luca Gargano entered the warehouses of Demerara Distillers Limited in Guyana and discovered an extraordinary liquid archive. Resting there were casks bearing the marques of long-vanished estates such as Skeldon, Albion, Enmore, Uitvlugt and Port Mourant—each preserving a distinct chapter of Demerara rum history.

Gargano selected a small number of these casks for Velier and released them largely at full proof, with many having spent their entire maturation under Guyana’s tropical conditions. The rums reflected not only individual vintages and marques, but also the character of historic production equipment, including the celebrated wooden stills whose origins reach back to the former sugar estates of British Guiana.

Bottled in exceptionally limited quantities, the Velier Demeraras transformed forgotten stocks into some of the most admired and sought-after releases in modern rum collecting. Together, they form a remarkable record of a disappearing distilling tradition—and of a moment when one selector was given rare access to the liquid history of Guyana.

Few names have shaped modern rum collecting quite like Caroni and Velier.

The Caroni Distillery was established in Trinidad in 1918 and became renowned for producing a distinctive heavy style of rum, traditionally associated with the island’s British naval rum heritage. When the state-owned distillery finally closed in 2003, an important chapter of Trinidadian rum history appeared to have come to an end.

Its remarkable second life began when Velier’s Luca Gargano discovered extensive stocks of ageing Caroni rum in Trinidad. Over the following years, Velier selected and bottled some of the finest remaining casks, many of them matured entirely in the tropical climate of Trinidad.

These releases introduced collectors to an uncompromising expression of Caroni: powerful, intensely aromatic and often bottled at full proof, with the characteristic notes of tar, petroleum, smoke, tropical fruit and old wood that have since become synonymous with the distillery.

What began with a series of relatively obscure bottlings developed into one of the defining stories of contemporary rum collecting. Velier documented different vintages, marks, ageing profiles and individual casks, while later releases explored the human history behind the distillery. The celebrated Caroni Employees series paid tribute to former workers through portraits and personal stories, transforming the bottles into documents of a vanished distillery as much as exceptional rums.

Today, the great Velier Caroni bottlings are among the most sought-after releases in the world of collectible rum. Early editions, rare vintages, high-proof expressions and exceptional single casks have become reference points against which other Caroni bottlings are measured.

This collection brings together outstanding examples from that remarkable collaboration between a lost Trinidadian distillery and the independent bottler that ensured its legacy would not be forgotten. Taken as a whole, the bottles tell the story of Caroni’s transformation from an industrial distillery destined to disappear into one of the great legends of modern rum.
